Our3Q – Saoban, Laos

Shui-Meng – the owner of the Saoban, a social enterprise in Laos which sells traditional, handmade headscarves, items of clothing, purses etc. All of them are made of natural ingredients. The company also exports products outside the country.

Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?

For brightness and absolute respect for the values which we follow. For strengthening inhabitants, mostly female inhabitants of Laos. For the fact that every product we sell has a unique story that we can tell our customers.

Q2: What is the biggest challenge/ obstacle for you now?

Today the biggest challenge is to maintain limited production of hand-made, natural goods. Customers, mainly foreign ones, start to appreciate this again. However, it is hard to stop changes, to stop mass, chemical production that conquers Laos slowly too.

Q3: What advice do you have for yourself in this situation?

To do our own thing as long as it is possible. We will not stop global trends, but we want to support those who choose the traditional way, by providing them with a steady income and appreciation of their work.

The questions were asked on our behalf by Anna and Andrea from How to (ex) change the world.
