Our3Q – Athene, Cambodia

Rajesh – owner of Athene, company which organizes short-term trainings concerning particular skills for various groups in Cambodia and other countries. They created a “carrier passport” as a way to attest new skills and by collaborating with employees from different countries they try and make it as recognizable as possible.

Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?

The tuk tuk (motorized rickshaw) course which we organized during low season was much more successful than we expected. We taught drivers how to read the map and work with clients. We trained more than 50 tuk tuk drivers in the past three months. Some of them have really realized the potential of new skills, one of them upgraded to a taxi. He changed his idea of customer service and he started to have clients so often that he could effort to buy the taxi.

Q2: What is the biggest challenge for you now?

Getting people to value our offer. Making people to understand that’s the right way. But it’s a challenge which we expected. It’s a new concept, people don’t even know how it will affect them. It takes some time.

Q3: What advice do you have for yourself in this situation?

Can I be honest? We are going to make it more fancy. We will make it more inspirational. Advertise a little bit better. We need to create an environment where people say: “aaah! That’s nice, I want to do this.”

Would you like to add somehing more?

Our aim can be described in two words: increasing employability. Giving more chances for better job and better pay, by providing education. But we don’t want to be academic. The people who teach you to do something are people who will eventually hire you. So they will teach you according to what they need in the industry. What’s more, we design short trainings exactly about skill which you need. There is no point to study for few years if you can learn practical skills which change your life in few hours.

The questions were asked on our behalf by Anna and Andrea from How to (ex) change the world.
