Alexa – founder of Cha Lai Orchid – nature retreat nestled in the mountains of Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is a social business working to promote sustainable tourism and kindness to elephants whilehelping at-risk womentake the first step to get out of poverty and see a future of hope.
Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?
That we are still here! Starting a new business in a new country was tough and there were times when we were living on mama noodle. Luckily there are actually lots of different ways to eat mama ;) It was my dream for the Chai Lai to be a community project. I feel proud to see the project being run by Karen women and see them mentoring the younger girls.
Q2: What is the biggest challenge for you now?
We receive threats ranging from eviction to physical violence since we have started to speak up for elephants and improve their conditions. Sometimes it’s scary and overwhelming but we still try to help them.
Q3: What advice do you have for yourself in this situation?
We are about to partner with other organizations so that our training and workshops can help people. I also hope we can raise money to help the elephants so some of them can retire and relax.
