Our3Q – Cool Guest House, Thailand

Xavier – founder of Cool Guest House, a permaculture hostel in the middle of the city.

Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?

We would like to be a demonstration center and inspiration for people. Giving inspiration and having people visiting us to see what we are doing is the biggest success. In my entrepreneur life I’ve never seen money as achievement. If I do your things accordingly, the rest will follow. I’m not doing things to be rich. I will be rich in the way that people come here, see and get inspired, and replicate or reinvent what we are doing here.

Q2: What is the biggest challenge for you now?

Education, mainly of Thai people. Many Thai people think permaculture is natural farming and they don’t see the bigger picture. We try to be a good example of urban permaculture and bring the knowledge to local people.

Q3: What advice do you have for yourself in this situation?

Time. It’s difficult, it’s not elastic. And more people, more followers. Now we start to have projects involving a lot of people. People start to come, at the beginning they wanted to stay only two weeks, now they want to stay much longer, they find urban permaculture interesting, but also challenging, because we are in the middle of the city. But it’s where most of the people in the world are living – in the city. And I think the biggest change we can make is in the cities.

Would you like to add something else?

If people want to come here to learn something, we have also volunteering opportunities. You can find us on coolguesthouse.com. People can write us an email, tell us about their occupation and motivation. We also support university students who want to do training within their studies. We can have a contract with the university or the education center, we can help with the work permit and visa to stay in Thailand. There are two different kinds of people who are usually coming: people who want to learn about sustainability and people who are more involved in organic farming. We are open for both. Together we can do more.
