Our3Q – Give.my, Malaysia

Felix – founder of Give.my, which is a crowdfunding platform that enables the public to directly contribute to teacher’s projects across Malaysia.

Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?

One of the projects from our crowdfunding platform. It’s a project of a teacher from Sarawak who has to travel 3,5h to reach his school. He is so dedicated to his job! It motivates me and reminds me why I do it. I see so many teachers who really want to do amazing things, but they don’t have enough funding.

Q2: What is the biggest challenge for you now?

The biggest challenge is still to educate the all Malaysia to understand what crowdfunding is. People from cities already know it but we need to educate also people from other places. Let people know what Give.my does and why. If a lot of Malaysians know what Give.my is, they can think about being part of it. Education is the most important thing. If education is not solid, everything falls apart. And thanks to Give.my people can directly support teachers they feel very strongly about, without any middle organization.

Q3: What advice do you have for yourself in this situation?

Educating people it’s quite difficult. We attend different events, tell people not only what crowdfunding is but also what social enterprise means. It’s still new concept in Malaysia.

Would you like to add something more?

In the long run I hope to empower teachers in public schools. The reason to open this platform was not to tell teachers what they should do but rather show others that hey, they are working maybe 20 years in the field, they know what their students need. I would love to play a role in raising salary for teachers in public schools. The quality of teaching is highly correlated with quality of life those teachers have. And one more problem we hope to face is the fact that the Ministry of Education is quite disconnected with schools. It doesn’t often put money where it is needed. We hope than one day if we crowdfund a lot of projects, the platform can be something which the Ministry of Education can refer to, to see what is going on in education, what kinds of projects are donated, instead of just pretending to know what teachers need and give it to them.
