Our3Q – GK Enchanted Farm, Philippines

Tito Tony – founder of The GK Enchanted Farm, which is Gawad Kalinga’s platform to raise social entrepreneurs, help local farmers and create wealth in the countryside. It also organizes university courses for social entrepreneurs and guided tour for people interested in the topic. Gawad Kalinga is a Philippine-based movement that aims to end poverty for 5 million families, by first restoring the dignity of the poor.

Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?

Getting people to believe in themselves. Getting people to believe that if we work together we can achieve every goal. Getting rich and poor to be partners in business and not keep going with the traditional way where the rich is a master and the poor is a slave. Showing people that we can build inclusive society by building solidarity economy.

Q2: What is the biggest challenge for you now?

Convincing people who don’t want to be convinced. We all have the same aspiration, we all want a safer world, we want good quality of life, dignity.

Q3: What advice do you have for yourself in this situation?

To convince people you need to show them success. If you talk about charity, asking money, you can’t get the right people to join. We need to create businesses with compassion and competence. Our example of success story is Human Nature, a brand selling 150 products worldwide. From movement to market. We need to use our corporate experience, use our education from top universities to serve a higher good. Making the world safer and creating new markets. And in the process you improve also the quality of life.

Would you like to add something else?

I come from the corporate world. But while raising four children I realized that the traditional path was not giving me happiness neither was it making the world safer for my children. There was more and more poverty. Only those of us who have the best credentials get the best jobs. And then we build artificial bubble of comfort, safety and status and we become blind to the deep poverty around us. I realized that even the best education will not help me to build my humanity. Instead of complaining about that, being depressed, I decided to do something. I decided to be radical optimist. The one who doesn’t see problems of the world caused by other people but the one who sees solutions. Solutions which need to be innovative. And include as many people as possible. Innovation and inclusion. So that’s what we do. We helped already 2500 communities and we keep going. Poverty is so huge that response can’t be small. If something is working we replicate it. Business now has the power to change the world. Social businesses. I can tell people from the best universities: hey, help me to fight poverty in my country and I make you rich. The more money you have, more freedom to do good, you can provide more jobs, more education, you will make the world to be better. And safer. If I have proof of concept I can convince even more people. If no one has done it, maybe you should? There are a lot of people which were never able to bring real change because they got scared. The biggest problem is fear. If you have a big dream that other people can feel, they will join you. Some of them have money, some have land, some skills, talents. Together we can change the world.

The questions were asked on our behalf by Anna and Andrea from How to (ex) change the world.
