Our3Q – PepTalk, Vietnam

Thuong – founder of Free Tour Guides and teacher assistant at language school Peptalk. Their program is based on two courses: a 5-months pronounciation course and a 5-months communication course. After finishing both, their students are able to have a conversation in quite a good English without the usual Vietnamese accent. PepTALK also organizes some actions for the students, for example free tour guides in Hanoi for foreigners thanks to which tourists can visit the city with local guides and students act as guides practising their English.

Q1: What do you appreciate yourself in the business mainly for?

That we decided to open this English Club. We work here not only as teachers but also as accountants, marketing specialists, etc. It’s much harder than just teaching English, but we wanted to try and face the challenge. All in all it’s working! Our students are able to speak English after finishing our courses, some of them even work with us now as teacher assistants.

Q2: What is the biggest challenge/ obstacle for you now?

There is a lot of concurrency, especially from foreigners who are coming here opening their own language schools. It’s hard to get enough student to be able to pay all expenses.

Q3: What will help you succeed?

First of all, we need to change localization. For now we are far from the city center, a lot of students don’t come here just because it’s too far. Then the quality of the course we provide must be as good as possible. I think the other activities we have can help: free tour guides, Sunday practising with tourists or meeting the foreigners which we invite thanks to ‘couchsurfing’ (couchsurfing.com).

Anything else must be said?

We have big plans for future. We started with the English club, but then we want also to organize some trips and home stays for tourists in different undiscovered parts of Vietnam in order to help local communities to develop. For now we teach them English so they can be ready for tourists. One of us works part-time in a hostel to get experience and all necessary information about the hospitality service. We collect different ideas and step by step try to make them real.

The questions were asked on our behalf by Anna and Andrea from How to (ex) change the world.
